“I look up to the mountains – does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Psalm 121:1-2
In ancient times, idols and false gods were built on high mountains. Worship often took place in high places, and when you wanted to pronounce a curse on an enemy you went up to the top of a mountain, offered your sacrifices and the called down the curses upon them. We see this happening in Numbers 22, when King Balak wants to curse Israel. In this Psalm, the writer is acknowledging that God, our God, is not like the gods of the mountains.
The first point he makes is that God is the creator of everything we see. If He is the creator, then there is no one more powerful than Him. He is the “all-powerful one”.
The next point is that God never grows tired. His eyes never get heavy and close. He is the “all-seeing one.”
The third point ties in with the second – he is ever watchful over His people and because of this He is the ultimate shield of protection. He is the “ever-loving one.”
So, if we are God’s child, when trouble comes our way we turn our thoughts and affection to the all-powerful, all-seeing, ever-loving Saviour of our souls, and declare, “My help comes from the Lord!”
When we rest in the assurance that He is “bigger than all my problems, bigger than all my fears and bigger than any mountain I can or cannot climb”, our souls will be at peace no matter how many false prophets call down their curses upon us. With God as our help we will always win the battle over our enemies.
