His Present Presence

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Ps 46:1

Lessons from the Psalms Part 5

Your laws are perfect and completely trustworthy. Psalm 119v138

Your justice is eternal, and your instructions are perfectly true. Psalm 119v142

Your laws are always right: help me to understand them so I may live. Psalm 119v144

Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm and the longest chapter in the Bible. I would highly recommend doing an independent study of it. The Treasury of David by Spurgeon (available freely on-line) is a great commentary and explanation of the psalms and there is months of reading material on Psalm 119.

This is the essence essence of what Christian faith is; an absolute conviction that The Word of God is truth. Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him as righteousness. His actions were often far less than honourable, but his actions could never save him, his faith did. Since the fall of man, we’ve all been born with the desire to choose good and bad for ourselves. We want to be sovereign in our own lives. We want to make all the decisions and call all the shots. But when everyone does what they think is right, there is no longer absolute truth. Everyone has their own truth even if it contradicts someone else’s truth. You can choose to change your truth, even on a day-to-day basis. We can see this being played out in our own parliament atm. It leads to confusion and a breakdown in society and will ultimately lead to anarchy. God’s Word is the only true truth. Though men reject it, destroy it, laugh at it, try to reinterpret it to mean something opposite to what it says, and pass laws to have it removed from schools and ultimately society, it will stand fast and remain forever.

Christianity is not about being good. God knew that once sin entered the World man could never be good again this side of eternity. That’s why Jesus died before the foundation of the earth. Heaven is not filled with good people, but with saved sinners. Christianity is about faith in God’s Word. If God said it, then it is true whether I like it or not, whether the rest of my family, friends, community or society believe it or not. When we have faith in ourselves, we will do what we think is right. When we have faith in God, we will do what He says is right, not because we have to, but because we want to. We will fail often, but as long as we return to the truth of God’s Word, we remain righteous in His sight. This is not a blind faith. There is such a huge amount of evidence that God has placed in this world to show that His Word is true. He has given us intellectual ability and countless resources to research for ourselves the truth of His Word. But He will never force anyone to do that. As the title of one of Ray Comforts best selling books proclaims “You can lead an atheist to evidence, but you can’t make him think!

Life is ultimately about where we put our faith. In ourselves, or in God. If you know everything and have never made a mistake, then I guess you could have faith in yourself and your own ideas about right and wrong, good or bad. Or you could put your faith in the shifting sands of popular culture, where things could be good and reliable for a short time, and then change into something bad and totally unreliable within a few short years.

The Christian has placed his faith on the bedrock of the Word of God which has stood the test of time, criticisms of man, burnings and banishment, but is more readily and easily available today than it has ever been before.

People carefully decide where to invest their money, which school they will send their children to and which course of study they will pursue to get the qualifications they need for the job they want. But how few consider and diligently research where they will put their faith.

My challenge to everyone reading this blog is to choose carefully where you put your faith, your eternal future rests upon it.
